Kinshasa, 13 March 2024 – Continuing its intense diplomatic agenda, the Director General of the Congolese Institute for Conservation of Nature (ICCN), Yves Milan Ngangay, granted an official audience to His Excellency Mr. Roberto Parente, Ambassador of Brazil to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This high-level meeting, held at the Office of the General Management, gave rise to a particularly fruitful exchange focused on sharing experiences between the two global giants of tropical biodiversity.
Three major areas of cooperation
Discussions between the Director General and the Brazilian diplomat revolved around three priority issues:
- Institutional twinning: The implementation of a technical partnership between the ICCN and the Chico Mendes Institute for the Conservation of Biodiversity (ICMBio), the Brazilian state body of reference.
- The Centenary of the ICCN: The invitation of honor addressed to Brazil to participate in the historic celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the creation of national parks in the DRC.
- Wildlife Crime Technology: Initiating a technology and skills transfer program to build the capacity of Congolese eco-guards in the fight against wildlife crime.
At the end of the meeting, Ambassador Roberto Parente was very satisfied with this exchange, which sustains and solidifies state collaboration in the environmental sector. For the ICCN, the Brazilian expertise in satellite monitoring and tropical forest management is a leading asset in modernizing the management of our protected areas.
